My husband used to cycle all around and sell sarees. Two years back while selling sarees he lost his life due to heart attack. As the family lost an earning member, my parents in law left us alone and went to live with my elder brother in law. I have four daughters. In our community a woman is not supposed work at others’ farm or outside home. Hence I started working as house maid in the lane where we live. There they used to give me meals instead of money. This way I made up livelihood for myself and my family. At times we never used to get any meal so I had to beg for it in the neighborhood. One day I found some women stitching quilts. Later I realized that these ladies do this job every day and they get this quilt stitching work from the organization of Didi. So I approached the organization and learn the skill of quilt making. Now being at home I am stitching quilts and earning almost Rs. 100/- to Rs. 125/- per day. Noticing my efforts the neighbors in my lane gifted me an old sewing machine.
Now I wish to work more and dream to educate my daughters and teach them to be self reliant.

Vijubai Ramdas Patil (35 years, Bhilali)
Being a slow witted woman, my in laws did not accept me and did not take me to their place after my marriage. Now I stay with my brother. I used to work in others’ farm. I had to go through lot of torture by my brother and sister in law. At times, I did not get my meals too. The picture changed since I got work of quilt making. This made me earn Rs.100 /- to 125/- per day and changed the perspective of my brother and sister in law towards me. I can take care of my own living. During the day, I stitch quilts in the back yard of my brother’s house. Now he has given me a small house to live by myself. I am very happy to get my house which I entitle.
