NGVN – Initiative during Covid -19
India is fighting strongly against Covid-19. Along with medical care, India has taken a strict measure like total lock down in the whole country. Everyone is facing the burnt of this but following the instructions. The poor o the country is majorly affected. BNGVN sees the similar effect in Bahadarpur and its vicinity. The area is rural and majority of the population work in farms, at construction sites as casual labour on daily wages and run very small enterprise. In the initial stage, nobody here had implied such grave impact of this virus on the society. But gradually the situation worsened. As we sensed the gravity of the situation, president of BNGVN, Ms. Nileema Mishra called a meeting of all the employees in February and asked everyone to stay safe at home and closed down functioning of the organization. Necessary groceries supply was given to all the employees. She also told team that it is everyone’s responsibility to do same kind of relief work for those going through difficult times.
Today, when social distancing is advised, there is great risk of infection of Corona if that is not followed. And at the same time poor families are worried about availability of daily necessities. The situation is tough. There are very few families who can sustain with what they have, only for next few days. But there are many who worry for today’s meal. Government is trying its best and we would also like to do our bit in facing the situation. BNGVN is identifying needy and deserving families of daily wage workers from Bahadarpur, Shirsode and Mahalpur villages and supplying grocery and  other necessary things at their doorstep. Typically this kit includes Sugar, oil, rice, wheat flour, yellow lentils (moong dal) , gram(tur dal ), tea powder, bath soap, washing soap, spices, turmeric, salt etc. The kit is sufficient for 15 days for a family of 5 people, but if required this can be replenished. Ms. Nileema Mishra herself visits each family along with couple of employees of BNGVN. Trustees of the organization have joined Ms. Nileema's by taking responsibility of clusters. They are checking the need and supply of the necessities in their respective cluster. Awareness about social distancing is created during such visits. Actually, all of them are taking risk but are more than happy to help these families. So far 350 Families have been supported and may need more grocery in coming days. We expect to address needs of approximately 1000 families in near future.
BNGVN’s few friends and well-wishers have contributed for this initiative as per their capacity. We are grateful for that but this is not adequate to cater the number of families that are in desperate need of necessities.  We also understand that these families have to survive in lockdown for quite a few days and hence the organization is facing huge challenge in fulfilling their needs with limited resources.

Bhagini Nivedita Gramin Vigyan Niketan(BNGVN) works to empower villages to have the capacity to provide means to livelihood and have a self sustaining ecosystem. We empower villages by providing opportunities for people to live with dignity.

We at BNGVN believe in the village's own resolve to find solutions to their problems. Life in Indian villages are hard with most livelihoods coming from agriculture and abject poverty being a reality to most families. We work to empower villages to have the capacity to provide means to livelihood and have a self sustaining ecosystem.

Our activities include providing microfinance and logistical support to farmers and village entrepreneurs at reasonable terms of repayment, organising women into Self Help Groups to encourage savings and impart skills for alternate livelihoods, creating a village fund to drive community activities and allow villagers to borrow from and building sanitation systems.
